For pure Amazon spends, one card has owned the category for years — the lifetime-free Amazon Pay ICICI. In 2026 it is still the default for Amazon loyalists, but new fees and exclusions have narrowed its edge, and for multi-platform shoppers a flat-cashback card now often wins. Here is the honest pick.
The category winner: Amazon Pay ICICI
No joining fee, no annual fee, and uncapped rewards:
- 5% back on Amazon.in for Prime members (3% for non-Prime)
- 2% at 100+ Amazon Pay partner merchants
- 1% on other spends — rewards credit as Amazon Pay balance, usable on the next order
If most of your online spend flows through Amazon, this is still the clear winner — and uncapped, unlike the Flipkart-branded cards (which now limit 5% to ₹4,000/quarter).
The 2026 catch
From 15 January 2026, a 1% fee applies on Amazon Pay wallet loads of ₹5,000+ (so cashback only works on loads under ₹5,000), and the card has added cashback exclusions across several everyday categories. The card is still excellent for Amazon orders, but the "earns on everything" assumption no longer holds.
When a flat-cashback card beats it
| You mostly shop… | Best card | Why |
|---|---|---|
| On Amazon | Amazon Pay ICICI | 5% Prime, uncapped, LTF |
| Across Amazon + Flipkart + Myntra + Swiggy | SBI Cashback | Flat 5% on all online spends, any merchant |
| Mostly Flipkart/Myntra | Flipkart Axis / SBI Flipkart | 5% on Flipkart — see our Flipkart card guide |
The rule: a co-branded card wins if you're loyal to that platform; a flat-cashback card wins if you spread spend around. Compare options in our best cashback cards shortlist, and value any points you earn with the reward points value guide.
FAQ
Is the Amazon Pay ICICI card still free?
Yes — lifetime-free, no joining or annual fee. The 2026 changes are about wallet-load fees and category exclusions, not the card fee.
Prime vs non-Prime — is it worth Prime just for the card?
Prime doubles your Amazon rate from 3% to 5%. If you spend ₹10,000+/month on Amazon, the extra 2% (₹2,400/yr) more than covers Prime's fee.
Is the 5% capped?
No — Amazon Pay ICICI rewards are uncapped, a real edge over the Flipkart-branded cards which cap 5% at ₹4,000/quarter.
