"No-cost EMI" is the most over-trusted phrase in Indian retail. On a ₹80,000 iPhone it sounds like free instalments — but you often forfeit the instant card discount, pay GST on the hidden interest, and a processing fee. Here's which cards give genuine no-cost EMI, the real-cost math, and when paying upfront actually wins.
What "no-cost EMI" really means
The retailer/bank still charges interest on the EMI — they just discount the product by the same amount so the headline is "no cost." But three things commonly leak value:
- You forfeit the instant bank discount. During sales, the 5-10% instant card discount is usually not available on no-cost EMI — you pick one or the other.
- GST on the interest. Even when the interest is "discounted," 18% GST applies on that interest amount — a real, non-refundable cost.
- Processing fee. Many no-cost EMIs carry a one-time processing fee (₹199-₹500+).
The real-cost math (₹80,000 iPhone)
| Path | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Upfront with 10% instant card discount | ~₹72,000 |
| No-cost EMI (no instant discount) + GST on interest + ₹299 fee | ~₹80,000 + ~₹500-1,000 leakage |
If a genuine instant discount is on the table, paying upfront often beats no-cost EMI by several thousand rupees. No-cost EMI wins mainly when (a) there's no instant discount anyway, and (b) you value spreading the cost over paying it now.
Cards with good iPhone/Apple EMI options
Apple + major issuers (HDFC, ICICI, Axis, SBI) frequently run no-cost EMI on iPhones via Apple's store and Amazon/Flipkart. The best card is usually whichever holds the current instant-discount tie-up on the platform you're buying from — so check the live offer. A strong rewards card (HDFC Regalia Gold, Axis ACE) also earns points on the EMI principal in some cases. For the festival angle, see our Diwali/Big Billion Days guide.
The rule
- Compare both paths — upfront-with-discount vs no-cost-EMI — at checkout, including GST + fee.
- If an instant discount exists, it usually beats no-cost EMI.
- Never revolve the EMI — a missed EMI converts to regular ~42% APR interest (see how interest is calculated).
FAQ
Is no-cost EMI really free?
Rarely fully — you often forfeit the instant discount, pay 18% GST on the (discounted) interest, and a processing fee.
Is it cheaper to buy an iPhone upfront or on no-cost EMI?
If a genuine instant card discount is available, paying upfront usually wins by a few thousand rupees. No-cost EMI suits cases with no instant discount.
Which card is best for an iPhone EMI?
Whichever holds the current instant-discount tie-up on your platform (Apple Store/Amazon/Flipkart) — check the live offer; pair with a rewards card where possible.
What happens if I miss a no-cost EMI?
It can convert to regular interest (~42% APR) plus penalties — wiping out the benefit. Keep autopay on.
