UPI used to mean your bank balance; since RuPay credit cards were allowed onto UPI, you can now pay by QR using your credit limit instead — and earn card rewards while you're at it. But only RuPay cards qualify, only some spends earn, and there are limits worth knowing. Here's the complete 2026 guide.

How it works

An eligible RuPay credit card links to a UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, etc.). Once linked, scanning a QR or paying a UPI ID draws on the card's available credit limit instead of your savings balance. The transaction posts to your credit-card statement exactly like a POS or online purchase — with the same interest-free period and the same rewards rules.

Note: only RuPay credit cards work on UPI. Visa and Mastercard credit cards cannot (yet) be linked to UPI in India.

How to link your RuPay card to UPI (step by step)

  1. Open your UPI app → Profile / Payment methods → Add credit card (or "Add RuPay Credit Card").
  2. Select your bank; the app fetches eligible RuPay credit cards on file.
  3. Authenticate with an OTP / set a UPI PIN for the card.
  4. The card now appears as a payment source alongside your bank accounts — choose it when paying a merchant QR.

Which banks & cards support it

Most major issuers have enabled RuPay-credit-on-UPI: HDFC, SBI, AU Small Finance Bank, Canara, Union Bank, IndusInd, YES Bank, IOB, BOI, PNB and more. Standout reward earners include Kiwi (1.5% on all spends including UPI) and Union Bank RuPay Select (up to 4% reward points). Any RuPay card from a participating bank can be linked, but reward rates vary widely.

What earns rewards — and the long list of what doesn't

This is where people lose money silently. UPI spends on a linked RuPay credit card earn the card's normal rate only on genuine merchant payments, and these count toward annual fee waivers. But most banks pay zero rewards on:

  • Person-to-person transfers (sending money to friends/family)
  • Wallet loads (Paytm, PhonePe wallet top-ups)
  • Rent, fuel, education fees
  • Government, tax and insurance payments

So a RuPay credit card on UPI is great for shop/merchant QR payments, but useless for moving money — and rent in particular earns nothing (see our rent payment guide for the real math).

Limits & charges

ItemDetail
Standard merchant limitUp to ₹1,00,000 per transaction
Special merchant-category limitUp to ₹2,00,000
Extra fee for using card on UPINone for you — no surcharge to the cardholder
Interest-free periodSame as any card spend (~45 days if you pay in full)

Reviewers confirm there's no extra charge to the cardholder for UPI credit payments at merchants (Kiwi). Merchants pay MDR above a threshold, which is between them and their acquirer — not your concern as a payer.

When to use it (and when not to)

  • Use it: at shops/restaurants/merchants that accept UPI QR but not cards — you get card rewards + the interest-free float on spends you'd otherwise make from your bank balance.
  • Don't bother: for P2P transfers, wallet loads, rent, fuel, tax — no rewards, and you're using credit for things better paid from your account.
  • Never: treat the credit limit as extra spending money — UPI's frictionlessness makes overspending easy. Pay the full statement; revolving at 36–48% APR wipes out any reward.
