RTGS

Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) is an RBI-operated payment system in which fund transfers are settled individually and in real time, with a minimum transaction value of ₹2 lakh and no maximum.

Understanding RTGS

RTGS is the highest-priority retail payment rail in India. The 'gross' in the name means each transaction is settled individually rather than netted against others — eliminating settlement risk between banks. The 'real time' means settlement happens within seconds of the bank's instruction reaching RBI.

RTGS is intended for high-value commercial and corporate transactions: property purchases, large vendor payments, inter-corporate transfers. Most retail customers rarely use it because UPI (up to ₹1 lakh) and IMPS (up to ₹5 lakh) cover everyday needs at zero cost.

Why it matters

For any transaction above ₹2 lakh where you want immediate, non-revocable settlement, RTGS is the standard. Property buyers, business owners paying suppliers, and anyone wiring large sums should know that RTGS is free for digital channels (mandated by RBI) and operates 24×7.

Example

Numeric example

You are buying a flat for ₹85 lakh and need to make a payment to the seller. UPI cannot handle this in a single transaction. You initiate an RTGS transfer at 2:15 PM through net banking — the funds debit your account immediately and credit the seller's account within seconds. The bank confirms via UTR.
