Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS)

Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) is a Government of India fixed-income savings scheme exclusively for individuals aged 60 and above (or 55+ for retirees with VRS), offering quarterly interest payouts and Section 80C tax benefit on the contribution.

Understanding Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS)

SCSS is one of the highest-yielding government-backed fixed-income instruments for senior citizens. Available at post offices and authorised banks (SBI, ICICI, HDFC, Axis, etc.). Single or joint account (with spouse) allowed.

The interest is paid quarterly — credited to the depositor's bank account on 1 April, 1 July, 1 October, and 1 January. This regular cash flow is particularly valuable for retirees relying on interest income for monthly expenses.

Why it matters

For senior citizens with a substantial corpus from EPF/PPF maturity or retirement gratuity, SCSS at ₹30 lakh per person (₹60 lakh per couple if both qualify) is the highest-yielding government-guaranteed instrument available. Combined with Section 80TTB's ₹50,000 deduction on senior-citizen interest income, SCSS forms the bedrock of post-retirement cash-flow planning for risk-averse retirees.

Example

Numeric example

A 65-year-old retiree invests ₹30 lakh in SCSS. Annual interest: 8.2% × ₹30 lakh = ₹2,46,000, paid as ₹61,500 quarterly. Over the 5-year term, total interest: ₹12,30,000. Section 80C deduction in year 1: ₹1.5 lakh (on first-year contribution; other years' contributions count toward 80C in those years if extended).
