Total Expense Ratio (TER)

Total Expense Ratio (TER) is the annual operating cost of a mutual fund expressed as a percentage of the fund's average net assets. It includes the fund management fee, distribution commission (in Regular plans), audit fees, custodian fees, and other administrative expenses.

Understanding Total Expense Ratio (TER)

The TER is calculated and disclosed monthly by every mutual fund. It is reduced from the daily NAV calculation, so the returns reported by the fund are always net of TER. SEBI has been progressively tightening TER caps — the 2018 reform reduced the maximum TER and required all commissions to be embedded in TER (no upfront commissions).

For index funds and ETFs, TER is dramatically lower — 0.05–0.30% range for large-cap index funds. This is why index funds are the lowest-cost equity exposure available in India. Active equity funds typically charge 0.5–1.0% TER for Direct and 1.2–2.0% for Regular.

Why it matters

TER is the single most important number in mutual fund selection that investors routinely ignore. Past performance varies; star fund managers move; market conditions change — but TER is paid every year, in every market, with absolute certainty. Picking a low-TER fund is one of the few free lunches in investing.

Example

Numeric example

You invest ₹10 lakh in an active equity Direct Plan with 0.8% TER. Each year, ₹8,000 (gross of growth) is deducted from your investment to cover fund expenses. Over 20 years at 12% gross return, that 0.8% drag turns a ₹96 lakh outcome (zero fees) into ₹83 lakh — losing ₹13 lakh to fees. An index fund at 0.15% TER would have ended at ₹93 lakh.
