What is an IFSC code?
IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It’s an 11-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies every bank branch in India participating in the RBI’s electronic funds transfer systems. You need it to send money via RTGS, NEFT, or IMPS — UPI also routes through it internally.
The structure encodes hierarchy:
- First 4 letters: Bank code (e.g.,
SBINfor State Bank of India,HDFCfor HDFC Bank,ICICfor ICICI Bank,UTIBfor Axis Bank). - 5th character: Always
0(reserved for future use). - Last 6 characters: Branch identifier (alphanumeric).
Example: SBIN0000300 is the State Bank of India branch at Mumbai Samachar Marg, Fort, Mumbai.
