What is an IFSC code?

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It’s an 11-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies every bank branch in India participating in the RBI’s electronic funds transfer systems. You need it to send money via RTGS, NEFT, or IMPS — UPI also routes through it internally.

The structure encodes hierarchy:

  • First 4 letters: Bank code (e.g., SBIN for State Bank of India,HDFC for HDFC Bank, ICIC for ICICI Bank, UTIB for Axis Bank).
  • 5th character: Always 0 (reserved for future use).
  • Last 6 characters: Branch identifier (alphanumeric).

Example: SBIN0000300 is the State Bank of India branch at Mumbai Samachar Marg, Fort, Mumbai.
