What is a PIN code?

The Postal Index Number (PIN) is a 6-digit code used by India Post since 1972 to streamline mail sorting and delivery. Each PIN represents a specific geographical area served by a designated post office. The structure encodes hierarchy:

  • 1st digit (1-9): Postal region (e.g., 1 = Delhi, Haryana, Punjab; 4 = Maharashtra; 5 = Andhra/Karnataka; 6 = Tamil Nadu/Kerala; 7 = West Bengal; 9 = Army Postal Service)
  • 2nd digit: Sub-region within the postal region
  • 3rd digit: Sorting district
  • Last 3 digits: Specific delivery post office

For example, PIN code 110001 means: region 1 (North India), Delhi sub-region (11), sorting district 0, post office 001 — which is Connaught Place HO.
